EXXON VALDEZ – 21 ANOS

Read more »

Petrobras has clarified certain aspects of articles published in the Brazilian press, titled respectively “Pre-salt well does not bear oil” and “Petrobras securities depreciated after news about dry well.”

Block BM-S-22 is located in the Santos Basin and is operated by the Consortium formed by ExxonMobil (40% – operator), Hess Corporation (40%), and Petrobras (20%). Pursuant to clauses set forth by the Consortium’s agreements (such as the Joint Operation Agreements) and a clause in the concession agreement signed by the Consortium with the National Petroleum Association (ANP), only the operator can announce events, such as well drilling results, to the regulator and to the market at large. WORLD OIL RESERVES FIGURES VARY CONSIDERABLY IN HISTORY

In this 1967 chart, the trade magazine Oil and Gas Journal presents the oil industry’s exaggerated view of the importance of the Middle East to the world.

Here the Middle East is shown with something like 250 billion barrels of crude oil reserves.

Only 23 years beforehand, Middle East reserves were estimated at 16 billion barrels.

By the 1990s the Middle East was over 500 billion. Read more »

THE OIL RESERVE FALLACY

Peak Oil is wrong

Ever since the world’s first commercial oil wells opened in the US and Russia in the 1850s, the question of future oil supply has been controversial.

Here is a more geologically accurate picture of world oil reserves that adds US Geological Survey figures for recoverable and unconventional oil reserves.

Today many people take for granted that oil production has peaked and that no substantial new amounts of oil are even possible to develop. Read more »

BRAZILIAN PRE-SALT RESERVES BRING ROLE OF OIL INDUSTRY INTO QUESTION

Published: Jul 31, 2009

The tug of war between the present concession model and production sharing agreements

Peter Howard Wertheim

Rio de Janeiro—Since the discovery of potentially massive oil reserves in the “pre-salt” region off the coast of Brazil, the Brazilian government has been grappling with how to structure and regulate exploration, drilling, and the potential for a large influx of foreign investment. And the Latin colossus is being catapulted into becoming one of the world’s largest exporters of crude.

José Sergio Gabrielli, Petrobras’ president and CEO told us that Petrobras and its foreign partners plan to produce 5.7 million barrels of oil and gas per day by 2020 (more than half the output of Saudi Arabia). Such a feat would make Brazil’s national oil company one of the five largest integrated energy companies in the world. Read more »
